After four minutes of stoppage time, 30 minutes of overtime, and a penalty shootout, Spain finally won its Euro 2020 quarterfinal against Switzerland.
Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty kick was the difference maker as Spain took a 3-1 edge in PKs to advance to the semifinals.
Spain will play the winner of Italy-Belgium.
Switzerland was left playing with 10 men after Remo Freuler’s red card in the 77th minute.
Three-time European champion Spain has only lost once to Switzerland in their previous 22 matchups. Throughout the championships, the Swiss had risen as the dark horses in the tournament, knocking out the 2018 World Cup champion France while coming back from a 3-1 deficit.
While the Spanish were a hard foe, the Swiss defense, particularly goalkeeper Yann Sommer, held off 28 shot attempts from an opponent who had possession for 70 percent of the match.
However, Sommer could not withstand the penalty shootout, where Oyarzabal sank the final goal necessary to send Spain to the semis.
