Robert Downey Jr bowed out magnificently as Tony Stark when his Iron Man died sacrificially in Avengers Endgame. Yet as the MCU embraces time travel and the multiverse there are ample ways the star could reprise the role without undermining his character’s death.
After all, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki died in Avengers Infinity War, but he continues playing a variant of the character from 2012 in his Disney+ show.
With Avengers 5 and 6 announced as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, Marvel fans are hopeful for some incredible cameos.
Now Giant Freakin Robot’s trusted and proven sources report that Iron Man is set to return for the Multiverse Saga’s blockbuster finales.
However, Downey Jr will allegedly be replaced by another actor playing a variant and it’s not Tom Cruise as was previously rumoured.
The insiders claim Marvel is looking for an actor in their twenties or thirties to play a younger Stark from another universe.
It’s not clear who this could be, but the outlet said – and this should be taken with a grain of salt – that a Stranger Things star “is almost certainly in the running”.
The actor in question is Joseph Quinn who plays Eddie Munson in the Netflix series and has been compared to Downey Jr by fans for his uncanny resemblance.
However, it’s also possible that this younger Iron Man that Marvel are looking for could in fact be a Kang variant.

In our opinion, the best-case scenario would be to see both Iron Lad and a younger Stark variant alongside a whole host of others including Riri Williams’ Ironheart.
This would mean that Downey Jr could reprise the role alongside say a cameo by Cruise and who knows who else.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty hits cinemas on May 2, 2025 and Avengers: Secret Wars follows on November 7, 2025.
